Lifestyle Changes I’ve Made for A Happier & Healthier Me | PART1

I think it’s safe to say that you’ve read the words ‘changes’ and ‘realisations’ more on Make Me Up Marie in the past few months than you have the entire time I’ve been doing this (which is going on 4 years now – crazy, right?). I guess it’s typical for a woman of my age to start growing up and looking at things with a new perspective, which is one of the reasons I love braining dumping here… because I know so many of you can relate.

Constantly wanting to improve can be burdening but when it means accepting things you know are healthier and more authentic for you, it’s a truly liberating and empowering experience. There’s a big difference between changing your lifestyle to appease others and adapting the way you do and think about things to fit your own core values. You will never be fulfilled, in terms of health or wealth, if you’re lying to yourself. And just like a flower, your buds will not flourish unless the conditions are just right.

Today I wanted to share some of the changes I’ve made in my life that have come about as a result of my fairly recent realisations, in the hope that it will inspire you to also take action and start doing something positive. After all, looking after yourself is one of the most important things you can do…

Embraced My New Name 

It’s been 3 to 4 months since I adopted my now name and I have absolutely no regrets. I feel so at ease with the name and saying it aloud makes me somewhat proud! It reminds me of my decisiveness and grounds me when I lose my way. Inspired by my love of nature and the written word, I doubt it will ever loose its appeal. To me, at least.

Only Blogged When I Felt Like It

Which… ummm… wasn’t much last month, was it? Awkward! Haha, honestly I’ll always keep it ticking over (with a little help from my guest bloggers) but I’m no longer going to inflict rigid schedules and unnecessary pressures on myself. I’m excited to gift myself creative freedom again! And who knows, you may just benefit from better quality content as a result…

Secured Professional Help with A Psychiatrist

It’s not the first time I’ve seen a therapist, nor the first time I’ve mentioned it but securing a weekly appointment with a trained psychiatrist at a specialist Women’s Mental Health Service has been a blessing I’ll never forget. Admittedly it took a while, but boy am I thankful for the support of the NHS – even when it is at its worst. It has given me a safe space to talk and feel without judgement, influence or risk of being a burden.

Redecorated The Bathroom

Surroundings are important, we all know that. And when you’re a freelancer like me, you know better than most that your home has to accommodate for downtime as well as work time. With one bedroom and an office/lounge, the bathroom is one of very few places we can go to wind down. Sadly, we weren’t enjoying it as much as we should have been. There was damp on the ceiling and mould in-between the tiles (heightened by my green hair dye). We decided to give it a good clean up and a few licks of white paint and now use it for hours at a time 😉

Gave A Heap of Clothes to Charity 

I’m a hoarder. Not objects – just clothes. Oh, and fashion accessories. Our space situation has never been ideal and though that will one day change, I recently gave up on the idea of hoarding everything I’ve ever bought until I can afford that luxury walk-in wardrobe. Instead, I’m leaning towards a more minimalist approach… I started by chucking what I no longer wear into bin bags and taking them down to the local charity shop. I’ve done it a few times but still have a long way to go. At this point it’s all about replacing heaps of options with multifunctional essentials. I’m literally going back to basics.

Spent More Time With Lady Madison 

When you get a glimpse of a rabbit in the wild, it’s breathtaking. I started to take my little Lady Madison for granted a bit. She can be incredibly sociable, hyper active and stinky at times, so it can be a bit of a chore keeping her clean, well-fed and entertained. I often forget how precious it is to have her trust and rely on me so much. With my change of attitude and shift in perspective, I am falling in love with her all over again. Seeing her happy and healthy makes me happy and healthy!

Took A ‘Little & Often’ Approach to Housework 

I used to approach housework in the same way I approached life in general – everything at once or nothing at all… I’d let the washing, ironing etc. build up until the end of the week and then “blitz” it on a Saturday afternoon. I’d either wear a full face of makeup or none at all, to ensure no one thought I was “trying too hard” when I wasn’t “immaculate”. These days, I’m (tryna be) more chill. I take a little and often approach, and if I so wish I will do or wear more – but no longer because I want to be “perfect”. Instead, it is because I have the energy or want to, or better yet, both!

Stopped Fishing For Followers

Self-promotion is becoming more necessary than ever. As a freelancer and blogger offering digital services, my competition isn’t limited to the local highstreet like the good ol’ days. Instead, my blogs and businesses compete with the world. With “influencers” and “industry leaders” now judged by follower counts rather than product quality or customer care, fishing for followers can seem like the best thing to do. You gotta be in it to win it – I do somewhat believe that – but it is imperative to remember that a number does not define your worth or determine your success. Quality over quantity is a saying I live by.

  1. THIS. I feel like I relate to everything in this post. Especially the house stuff. I was the same with letting it pile and then just mowing through a giant day of house cleaning but it didn’t really work because I’d get overwhelmed and then clean nothing.
    So I try and clean just a little every night and it seems to work better. Except with laundry. ?

    1. Oh yay!!! Thank goodness it’s not just me. Haha. Don’t get me started on the laundry – I find myself staring at the pile, wondering how on earth it ever got so large LOL… probably time to get myself to the launderette. My current machine just can’t handle this, no matter how often I load & unload! Thanks for your comment lovely, gives me some comfort to know I’m not alone 🙂

    I applaud your courage in seeking psychiatric help, and greater courage to write about it; it’s scary to go inside, face what needs facing and come out more or less intact on the other side.
